Shall I compare thee to a summer’s Day?

This poem he is saying a lady he loves is more lovely and temperate. She is as beautiful as a summer day. Her complexion shines as bright as the sun from heaven. Though a summer day is too fleeing. Her beauty will not leave, for her beauty is so beautiful that it couldn’t possibly leave her. Something as beautiful as gold dims in time, but her complexion shall never dim. For as long as man breathes, will her beauty lasts. He feels that she is so beautiful that it will lasts for eternity. He thinks she is the most beautiful girl in thew whole word. He has never seen anything quite as beautiful as she is. He feels that even death could not hide her beauty. That is shall never fade, even when she passes away.

Poems

John Donne’s poem Batter my heart, three-personed God, for you This poem was my favorite one the poems we had to read. It was beautiful. It was much like a Psalm from the Bible. This poem is about a person’s plead to God to renew their heart. Every christian has struggles and we all have times where we feel as though we have fallen away from God. He wants God to rule and be the center of his heart again. He needs God to break him down and to restore his heart and He wants the three person God, God the father, the Son Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. He feels he has fallen, or betrothed to the enemy. He is seeking mercy from God, and wants God to rule over his heart again.

The John Donne “Song” Is about a man “who is shooting for the stars” He wants to go and find a lady that is true and fair, but believes she would cease to exist, if he goes to find he. He believes that no love exist for him and if he went to look for her he would never find her to be there. He believes it to be impossible as catching a shooting star or a meteorite.

Death be not proud:

This poem is about death and how it cannot defeat us. The Lord will win in the end, thus death will lose. Death is what death has over us, but God will defeat him and we will have eternal life. In the end death, will cease and will for those it has already taken from us.

Flea was a letter to his wife, when he had to leave for business. He did not want to leave, but had to. He felt this departing was temporary and they would meet again.

Ernest Hemingway- A Clean Well lighted Place

This story was about a deaf man who went to a local cafe. He was drunk and kept asking for more drink, but the waiter told him that it was closing and asked him to leave. The two waiters kept arguing whether or not he “had it all” The man was a very rich man and was married.  I think this story is asking age-old question “Can Money buy you happiness” The man tried to commit suicide in the previous week.  The waiter was  asking the other waiter why he tried to commit suicide, the other waiter told him that the man was in despair. Then the other waiter asked him what for, but the waiter said that he was not in despair about anything  because he had plenty of money. The waiter was saying that if someone had plenty of money, then they have everything they need and they have nothing to be depressed about. The story shows that money isn’t everything and how people tend to think it is. I believe this story shows people  there is more to life than money. The story did leave me with a lot of questions though. I think it ended abruptly, it made me question what happened to the old man?Did the waiter have insomnia and why did what made him not like the dark. I have to say that this was by far the worst story I had to read for this class. The story did have a good message in it though. I think too many people get caught up in trying to become rich and don’t realize how much they truly have.

A Pair Tickets

A Pair of Tickets by Amy Tan; This story ia about a young girl going to China to see her half sisters. Her mother had to leave them, they were left on the side of the road. The mother could not carry them anymore. My first reaction was. how could she leave her daughters? Later, I realized she didn’t really have a choice. The story is truly sad.  The mother never met her daughters again. Se was searching for them for years. Her husband and other daughter went to China, the girls wrote back and told them they were fine and to come see them. They did not know their mother was dead until the daughter was there. The story was all over the place, though with tons of descriptions. I thought it did drag on I wished it told more about the twin’s lives though

The Storm; “A Storm within?”

The Storm by Kate Choppin is set in Louisiana. The storm in the story served as the catalyst in by giving Calixta and Alcee` plenty of time to make love without the fear of her husband coming home and catching them in the act.  As they make love to each other the storm grows intense and their passion for each other grows.  They rarely saw each other since she was married. I think this was put in the story as sort of an excuse to make it ok that she was cheating on her husband. I think the wife feels that it is ok to cheat as long as you do not get caught and that is not done all the time, but seldom.

This story shows the one night that the lovers made love to each other; they have seen each other before, but never alone. This shows they have wanted to be alone, but could never find the time. The story ends with a letter from Alcee to his wife in Biloxi. He said he was fine and that he could bear the separation a little longer as long as she and the babies were fine. The wife was happy to receive the letter. I think that Alcee is pretty much a sorry excuse of a man, and Calixta isn’t any better than he is. I believe they are both equally wrong for what they have done.  The story ends by saying all of them are happy, but I don’t believe someone who is living a lie can never be truly happy.

Edgar Allan Poe The Tell-Tale Heart

Edgar Allan Poe’s The Tell-Tale Heart shows the reader the mind frame of the author Poe. Throughout the story the narrator is asking the reader if he is “mad”. Poe went through many struggles in his life. He lost his mother and his wife to tuberculosis. It is known after her dismiss his life began to fall apart. Like, in the story in the Tell-Tale heart he dealt with issues or demons in his mind. He struggled with depression, alcohol assumption, guilt, and many other emotional problems. I believe he used this story as a sort of relief of some of the thoughts that ran through his mind, even though it is hard for me to believe anyone could think of something as terrible as this story.  The story was a dark and sick story of a murder. I feel that only a sick man could think of a story like the Tell-Tale Heart

A & P by John Updike Brandi Shead English 1102

The short story A & P s about a young man in a grocery store, who is watching three girls who have on attire that you would not normally have on in a grocery store. This story is showing how people feel about whether customers should follow the stores procedures. “The Customer is always right” saying is put into question here. The ladies have swim suites on and it is making the other customers feel uncomfortable.” But There was no doubt, this jiggled them. A few house slaves in pin curlers even looked around after pushing their carts past to make sure what they had seen was correct” John Updike A&P pg. 19 Here you can see how odd it is for these girls to be in this attire and how it is making the customers feel. There is this strange awkward feeling throughout the whole grocery store..This is why I believe the store  has the procedures for what attire the customers can wear.”I could see from the way his eyes went that he hadn’t noticed she was wearing a two- piece before.” “We want you decently dressed when you come in here” – John Updike A&P pg. 20 The manager is telling this to the ladies in the swimsuits. Though, many would say that there is no reason to think that a bathing suit is indecent, but it is when you are in a grocery store. There is a time and place were certain clothing should be worn. The boy in the store has the view that there is nothing wrong with what the girls  are wearing ” All that was left to be seen was old McMahon patting his mouth and looking after them sizing up their joints. Poor kids, I began to feel sorry for them, they couldn’t help it” John Updike A&P pg. 19  He knew that this was not going over well with the customers. He knew that the girl’s must felt all the eyes that were on them. After the manager spoken to the girls and asked them to leave the boy quit his job. He felt the manager was to hard on them and embarrassed the girls. The manager argued that the ladies were embarrassing the store employees.  I felt the side of the manager, because this was a business. Though I do feel that he could have handled it differently, Something needed to be said to the girls about their attire. So, conclusively to me,  the saying “the Customer is  always right” is not true.
